Active Release Techniques (ART) for Ironman and Endurance Athletes

Our ART | Ironman program is designed to address the requirements of short distance and endurance athletes. The goal of the program is to address the needs of high performance athletes. The program includes fine tuning muscle movements to reduce injury and increase performance. The program also includes methods for treating injury while maintaining a high level of training.

Rose Physical Therapy Group is the only physical therapy clinic full-body certified to provide ART | Ironman therapy in the Washington, DC area.

Active Release Technique (ART) is a patented soft-tissue treatment process for locating and breaking down scar tissue and fibrotic adhesions which cause pain, stiffness, decreased range of motion, numbness, and physical dysfunction. These types of Repetitive Strain Injuries are common for athletes, and especially endurance athletes.

Common conditions treated by ART include:

  • IT Band Syndrome
  • hamstring or groin pulls and strains
  • calf tightness
  • piriformis syndrome
  • glute tightness
  • plantar fasciitis
  • shin splints
  • back and neck pain
  • frozen shoulder
  • rotator cuff tendinitis and tears
  • hip pain

Why is ART different?

ART therapy relieves the underlying cause of these problems. ART has become one of the most sought after sports injury techniques in professional and amateur sports due to its high degree of effectiveness.

ART is a highly successful approach to injuries of muscles, tendons, nerves, and the surrounding soft-tissues.  ART is not massage, physical therapy, or chiropractic care.  While those procedures relieve muscle and motion dysfunction, they do not necessarily address the underlying problems caused by scar tissue formation.

Every ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment.  The ART provider uses his hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves.  Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.  These treatment protocols, over 500 specific moves, are unique to ART.  They allow the provider to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient.
